Aalborg Forsyning pilot test
We are pleased to share the exciting developments from our partners at Aalborg Forsyning regarding the recent pilot test in the District Heating sector. The test, conducted in the eastern part of Aalborg, aimed to enhance the efficiency of the district heating network and reduce energy consumption.
One of the key outcomes of this pilot test was the remarkable reduction in heat loss within the distribution system. Over the period from December 2022 until now, the supply temperature in 150 residences was successfully reduced by approximately 21°C, bringing it down from around 75-80 °C to a more efficient 55-60°C. As a direct result of this initiative, heat loss in the District Heating grid within the test area was reduced by an impressive 20%.
This has been done by installing a local pumping station, which is operated by connecting to the heating control system in the building. This way, the supply temperature can be continuously adapted to the residents and the buildings actual heat demand. When reduction the extra electricity usage from the local pumping station, the total reduction of the energy consumption is 17%.
Aalborg Forsyning energy consultant Christian Byrjalsen is satisfied with the project’s preliminary results: “This project confirms that there is a potential in reducing the energy consumption when producing district heating by creating a closer connection between our control of the district heating grid and the heat systems and controls in buildings. The project will continue until 2024, and we are already looking into implementing similar solutions in other areas.”
