Heat Generator Control Algorithm

In order to reduce the energy needed for space heating, we have developed and validated a novel heat generator control algorithm. The latter relies on information sensed by smart thermostatic radiator valves (STV) to adapt the heat production. The method adapts the production based on individual radiator needs. This is a big step forward when compared to the standard heating-curve control that only relies on the outdoor temperature.

The solution was gradually deployed on the Neuchâtel site in Switzerland and compared to the default heat controller (i.e. heating curve). The normalized heat consumption for both controllers can be observed in the figure below. One can clearly see a reduction in energy usage for the optimized control, around 15% for an outdoor temperature of 5°C.

Our closed-loop energy service, developed within the domOS Project, is already showing promising results in the Neuchatel demo site. By utilizing a novel heat generator control algorithm that adapts heat production based on individual radiator needs sensed by smart thermostatic radiator valves (STV), we were able to reduce energy consumption for space heating by 15% compared to the standard heating-curve control. Have a look at the photo of the radiator equipped with a smart thermostatic radiator valve.
